As the final stanza of “Just as I am” rings in our ears one last time during the church service, we grasp the pew as we contemplate our choice. Should we walk that center aisle and rededicate our lives once more or should we stand still and let the music and the moment pass? The pastor has invited us to come forward but is going forward the direction we truly desire to go? After all, we know that during the week, we disobey our parents, cheat on tests, gossip, mistreat those who aren’t like us, envy those who have more than us, worship our clothes, cars and boyfriends. So maybe responding to this invitation by going forward isn’t the right thing to do. Maybe we should just wait another week and see how we feel next Sunday before responding to the invitation. We wait. The music is fading and the pastor is beginning his walk down the aisle to the back of the church to shake hands. The service is coming to an end. We shrug our shoulders and think- “Oh well, I’m a Christian at least. That invitation was really meant for people who aren’t Christians anyways.”
Sadly, there are a lot of believers who think that God’s invitations stop at the moment of spiritual birth. We take on the attitude that we have completed our purpose on this earth because we have acknowledged what Jesus did for us and in turn we are saved from hell. We believe there is nothing more for us to do for Him but try to be good and participate in church activities. Wouldn’t we know better than to believe this if we truly loved Him and saw the world through His eyes?
We must acknowledge that in each and every moment of our lives, there comes an invitation. These invitations are specifically tailored for each of us by God to invite us in different ways to fulfill His purpose and to change this world for Him.
We no longer can live in this world with our ears deafened, with our eyes closed, and with our hearts drooped.
If we don’t respond to these invitations, how will this world be changed for Him?
